Alison Brooks Architects: ‘ReCasting’ for Venice Biennale 2018

My Client:           Benchmark

Architect:           Alison Brooks Architects

Year:                   2018

Materials:           Garnica ‘Efficiency’ poplar plywood

About:

Alison Brooks Architects turned to Benchmark in 2018 to make their installation ‘ReCasting’ for that year’s Venice Biennale. In turn I was tasked with taking their concept model and designing in every last panel and internal workings to realise the structure as true to the original vision as possible. The project was on a very tight schedule and many long nights ensued to get my CAD work complete, panels ready for CNC and information prepared for the workshop. We also worked with Arup on the engineering of the arch, defying gravity to get 2 tons of fanning plywood to self-support!

Two lorries out to Venice, boats various and one crane later; ReCasting was re-built at the Arsenale in Venice and was deemed a great success - testament to the skill and determination of everyone involved.
